Human Brain Mapping is a powerful research approach employing a set of neuroimaging techniques in living humans to create detailed ‘cartography’ of brain function, microstructure, and connectivity. This requires multidisciplinary efforts to enhance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underneath various cognitive and behavioral processes, as well as to shed light on the causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Our society was established in 1999 through the enthusiasm of 124 founding members, representing a diverse array of clinical and basic neuroscience disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach reflects the complex nature of brain research, integrating insights from neurosurgery, psychiatry, neurology, radiology, pediatrics, physiology, psychology, physics, and engineering.
From 1999 to 2023, we fostered cross-disciplinary collaboration, translation of basic neuroscience findings into clinical applications by holding annual meeting and advanced both our understanding of brain function and the development of neuroimaging and novel therapeutic interventions. The merger with the “Human Brain Imaging Research Group” in 2024 represents a significant milestone in our organization’s evolution. This integration brings together expertise in advanced neuroimaging techniques and connectomics, aligning with global trends in big data neuroscience.
We aim to advance human brain mapping research in Japan and contribute to medical science by strengthening partnerships with relevant academic societies overseas and promoting international collaborative research and personnel exchange.
